Improve Your Laptop Battery Life

When you use a modern operating system and run out of memory for your software, the operating system swaps out part of the memory to the hard drive to free up the memory for more tasks. If you run several programs at once or have little RAM, this swapping can occur constantly, making your computer run much slower and more often. All this hard drive activity is a drain on your laptop's battery, meaning that the more you use the hard drive, the more the laptop uses the battery.

Therefore, it would seem that if you were to increase the RAM on your laptop, you would reduce the memory swapping. This would reduce how often your hard drive is accessed and could improve your battery life. And, an increased amount of RAM would improve how quickly and smoothly your computer performs. Of course, the best thing would have been to purchase a laptop with far more RAM than you thought you'd need in the first place.
